Ghosting

Ghosting is a phenomenon common to E-Ink displays, used in all reMarkable paper tablets, where traces of previously displayed images sometimes remain partially visible on the screen. This is completely normal behavior, and will most often occur right after erasing or moving your text within a notebook.

These "ghosts" are cleared whenever the screen does a refresh, which is what is happening when your screen "flashes" by coloring the entire screen black for a moment. If you want to manually trigger a refresh to clear any ghosts, you can do so by:

  1. switching between pages in your document (swipe right to go to the previous page; and then left to return) or
  2. by toggling the visibility of your layers off and on again a few times:
    1. tap the layers icon from the toolbar (looks like a stack of papers)
    2. tap the eye icon next to the layer name once to hide the layer and then again to reveal it.

Should the ghosting persist even after your screen has refreshed, try putting your device in sleep mode and then waking it again. If this is still not enough to clear your screen, or if the issue keeps recurring, your device might be defective, and you should get in touch with our Support Team.
